Australian Airline Qantas launched their new next generation check-in experience designed by Marc Newson at Perth,s airport.

The ‘next generation’ check-in should provide greater speed and ease through the airport terminal by eliminating airport queuing, based on a new Qantas frequent flyer card, a Q card reader and bag drop facility.

Customers arriving at the airport who have not yet checked in online or via their mobile device, will be able to simply touch their card at an all-new Q card reader located throughout the check-in hall. The Q card reader will provide both visual and audible recognition of successful check-in. All customers traveling with bags will be able to use the new bag drop service at next generation check-in airports.

You will be forgiven for mistaking the object pictured below as a sculpture or a home decor accessory. In reality this tree is not there to make a creative statement but to toast some good old bread. The Toaster Tree has been conceptualized by Xu Yan Xiang and it features Transparent nano-electric membrane technology which in English simply means, the leaves are actually the grill!

Russian based Studioin came up this cool packaging for Good Milk.

“Milk is a universal and indispensable product. Going along with the modern tendency to popularize healthy lifestyles and recognizing the importance of environmental protection, we suggest that this product, serving all peoples well since times immemorial, should be super-popularly served in aluminum cans. Their advantages include light weight and strength, aesthetical appearance and compactness. Aluminum cans fully preserve the natural taste and quality of the product and are easily opened…”

The design also included Tetra Pak packaging.

Move-On is a suitcase collection designed by Agent that addresses some issues frequently faced by people who travel. A suitcase collection for the mobile individuals of today, and tomorrow.

“We think the concept of traveler is a bit outdated and the modern nomads are in fact experience seekers who need more than just tools for their journeys.”

With Move-On Agent want to show how suitcases can be as practical and beautiful as they have always been, but with a little plus.

In celebration of World Industrial Design Day (WIDD) on 29 June 2010, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) invites designers from around the globe to initiate events reflecting this year’s theme:

“Industrial Design: Humane solutions for a resilient world”

This topic was selected to facilitate collaboration within the industrial design community with the goal of producing tangible solutions to world problems.

“This theme stems from the immense response received from our recent ‘Uniting Designers in Disaster’ initiative launched on Facebook on 22 January in light of the disaster in Haiti and conveys the important role industrial design can play in global issues,” stated President Mark Breitenberg.

While the theme for WIDD 2010 calls on the design community to contribute their knowledge and skill, this day of observance is significant in fostering a global understanding of industrial design and all that it encompasses.

Events will take place in the following countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Germany, Ireland, Iran, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and United Kingdom.

For a list of events go here.

Since 2006, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) San Francisco has organized San Francisco Design Week as a way to reach out to a diverse community of over 20,000 Bay Area design professionals as well as local businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, students, the design-savvy public, tourists, and more. AIGA SF will be partnering with the San Francisco chapters of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the Interaction Design Association(IxDA), the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD), and Adobe Systems, to sponsor a full week of events highlighting the diversity and professionalism of the design community around the bay. Their goal is to raise public awareness of the impact that all design: graphic, product, interior, fashion, architecture, advertising, etc, has in the San Francisco Bay Area.

San Francisco Design Week will take place from June 14 to June 19, 2010.
